Storm spam peaks at 10 each morning

T security and control firm Sophos has identified a trend of Storm spam e-mail traffic peaking in accordance with time zones across the world. According to their study, the spam e-mail traffic peaked thrice in any 24-hour cycle while computers in Beijing, London and New York come online.

“The large number of compromised PCs in Asia, Europe and USA kickstart a new barrage of malicious spam as they are turned on at approximately 10am each morning,” said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos. “The spam e-mails which spread the malware are tailored to grab your attention by referring to timely events such as Valentine’s Day or breaking news stories.” Storm is a worm that affects computers using Microsoft operating systems. This nasty Trojan, which uses the backdoor in a computer system and bypasses normal authentication, was at its most prolific in January, accounting for 16 per cent, or one in six, of all e-mail messages.
